I Know That Sound

“I know that sound,” she said.

She recognized the rhythmic nature of the thumping sound. Was it plumbing? A loose window screen?

It sounded so familiar.

The sound seemed like it was coming from everywhere.

She looked around the inside of the house. She walked around the exterior.

“What is that?”

There was nothing.

“I know that sound,” she said for the second day in a row.

“What is that?”

The thumping kept her up at night.

She’d checked the interior and exterior of the house thoroughly.

There was nothing.

Today a handyman came and checked the water main, the water heater, the gas line, the sewer, the vents, and the furnace.

There was nothing.

The sound seemed like it was coming from everywhere.

And it was getting louder.

The thumping kept her up at night.

“I KNOW that sound,” she said for the third day in a row.

“What is that?”

Tomorrow she’d check the attic.

There was nothing in the attic.

“I know that sound,” she said for the fourth day in a row.

The sound seemed like it was coming from everywhere.

“Dear God…

“It’s a heartbeat…

“But what could be making it?”

It was getting louder.

The thumping kept her up at night.
