September is National Yoga Month: Local Studios Open Doors to Curious Students

August 28th, 2014

Martinez, CA – Throughout the month of September, local yoga studios are participating in National Yoga Month, designed to educate, inspire and generate awareness of the positive impact of yoga on health. People across the country will have access to an entire week of free yoga classes by visiting www.yogamonth.org, while local studios have free events and special workshops covering aspects of yoga for beginners and experienced practitioners alike!

During National Yoga Month, one of a select few national health observances, millions will come together for free events and activities. Festivities will take place across the U.S., with hundreds of studios, teachers, individuals and organizers taking part in their own hometowns. The events are all designed to educate people about the mind and body benefits of yoga practice.

“This will be our fourth year participating, but the first since our move to Martinez,” said local yoga studio owner Adri Frick of Type A Yoga. “It’s exciting to be able to really educate people in our community about the benefits of yoga. Recently focus on yoga has shifted from a complementary and preventative medical practice for overall health into only the physical fitness aspects. Events like these give us an opportunity to show everyone in the community, regardless of fitness ability or physical condition, how to find a practice that will benefit them.”

In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services designated September as National Yoga Month, one of a select number of national health observances. That same year, thousands of yoga and health enthusiasts participated in a 10 City Yoga Health Festival Tour featuring yoga classes, lectures, music, entertainment, exhibits. Since then, the initiative has taken root as a global awareness campaign, educating, inspiring and motivating people to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Each September over 2,000 yoga studios will participate in the One Week Free Yoga program, and will host hundreds of yoga classes and events.

Type A Yoga in Martinez will be offering free open house events throughout the month, including First Friday Free yoga in the park, drop-in open house “Tea Times,” and culminating in September 30th’s “A Time for Yoga” at 7pm.

“ ‘A Time for Yoga’ is a worldwide event,” said Frick. “Each participating studio holds a free community yoga class, followed by a meditation in their respective timezones. A wave of people across the world, some of whom have never practiced yoga or meditation before, will be taking this class ‘together’! People think you have to be super-flexible or thin to practice yoga, so this gives them a chance to see that everyone is welcome.”

In addition to free events, some studios are holding extra classes and workshops to encourage both beginners as well as existing yoga students to learn new aspects of yoga. Type A Yoga will hold workshops on detailed pose alignment, anatomy, fundamentals, and how to design a personal home-based practice safely. Upcoming events after Yoga Month, such as an 8 week Yoga for Anxiety series, will continue to promote yoga as a therapeutic practice for general health.

“We are all looking for ways to take an active role in managing our health. There are readily available solutions that don’t necessarily require insurance or even a doctor,” said Johannes Fisslinger, co-founder of National Yoga Month. “Preventative wellness can be accessed by simply unrolling a yoga mat!”
