3 Tricks to Make Your Lake Tahoe Visit Affordable

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Most people don’t visit Lake Tahoe because it’s the second deepest lake in the United States, or because the lake is 2-3 million years old. Although these facts are perhaps interesting, the many colors seen in its pure depths, the numerous parks, ski resorts, and nightlife activities, and the Sierra’s beauty are what truly captivates most visitors.

The region’s popularity, year-round beauty, and wide range of activities, can make it hard to plan an affordable vacation. These tips for three popular Tahoe spots can save you hundreds, even thousands, off your ski or summer fun.

South Lake Tahoe: Cross the Street

Consider a Nevada casino instead of a California resort. If you cross Stateline Avenue and stay on the Nevada side of the state line, you’ll still be able to visit the shopping and restaurants of Heavenly Village or skiing at Heavenly for a fraction of the price.

Harvey’s is less expensive than Harrah’s, but staying at this sister property allows you to take advantage of all  the same amenities. Simply cross Highway 50 via a snow-free underground tunnel to enjoy a more expensive property.

Still too expensive? Try looking off the beaten path. While there are many lodging options on Highway 50 itself, there are less well-known, smaller inns and lodges a block or more off the main road on the California side of Stateline. Walking one or two extra blocks can save you hundreds.

North Lake Tahoe: One Lake Over

If Tahoe City is out of reach, but you still want to ski Northstar or other nearby properties, try nearby Donner Lake in Truckee. Located about 30 minutes north of Tahoe City, the Donner area features a more relaxed pace for serious skiers, families, and large groups of friends. There are many vacation rentals available, such as in Tahoe Donner or lakefront properties at Donner Lake Village. These may include passes to amenities like smaller snow parks for the kids or community centers.

You can also enjoy scenic views of Donner Lake from the state park or the marina, historical sites dating back to Western Expansion, and quaint downtown Truckee, featuring modern shops and restaurants in historical Gold Rush era buildings.

East Side: Hot Springs and Hot Spots

Located less than an hour east of Incline Village on the eastern North Lake side, Carson City glimpses into Nevada’s Comstock Lode past while offering night-time activities and live entertainment. In addition to being the Nevada state capital, Carson City also features museums dedicated to state history, rail expansion, and frontier history. The Carson City Hot Springs have been soothing tired muscles and easing tension since 1849.

One bonus tip: There are also several smaller ski resorts that offer passes for much less than the big names. In South lake, try Sierra-at-Tahoe. In North Lake, try Mt. Rose.

Whether you prefer skiing on winter mountain snow or summer lake waters, Lake Tahoe is fun with friends or family. A few smart choices, however, can also make it affordable for anyone.
